The Value of Ownership

For some time now, I’ve been thinking about a simple idea that has shaped both my personal life and my career. It’s an idea that’s presently out of fashion, but I offer it for your consideration anyway: I value ownership.

By ownership, I don’t just mean possessing things. I mean the responsibility, stewardship, and long-term perspective that often comes with owning something that matters. Whether it’s a home, a family business, or shares in a company, ownership encourages us to care for what we’ve been entrusted with and to think beyond today.

We live in a time when many important issues are being debated, and there are no easy answers to the economic challenges our country faces. As always, thoughtful people can disagree on the best path forward. Rather than wade into those debates, I’d simply like to share with you why I believe ownership offers tremendous value to us and our communities.

I purchased my first stock while I was still in grade school. One investment did well; another didn’t. Even then, I learned an important lesson: owning a business means sharing in both its opportunities and its risks. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong appreciation for investing and for the role that ownership can play in building wealth over time.

Today, I own stocks, bonds, a home, and a business. These assets represent more than financial value – they represent years of planning, responsibility, and purpose. They will one day become part of the legacy I leave to my children, grandchildren, and the charitable organizations that are important to me. That perspective reminds me each day to be a thoughtful steward of what I own.

One of the things I value most is my ownership in Iowa Wealth Management. When our firm was founded, our vision was straightforward: build an independent firm dedicated to exceptional client service and prudent, long-term investment management. We believed that even against the largest Wall Street financial institutions, an Iowa-based independent firm focused on clients could make a meaningful difference.

That philosophy continues to guide our investment approach today. Whenever it is appropriate for a client’s goals and circumstances, we believe there is value in owning great businesses through carefully selected individual stocks. We aren’t trying to chase the latest trend or trade in and out of the market. Instead, we seek to invest alongside companies we believe can create lasting value over time.

Ownership isn’t always the easiest path, and it certainly isn’t without risk. But history has shown that patient ownership of strong businesses has been one of the most effective ways to build wealth over the long term.

To our clients: thank you for allowing us to help you pursue that journey. We appreciate the trust you’ve placed in Iowa Wealth Management, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to serve as stewards of your financial future.
